Cambridge-Boston Summit Seen as Step Toward Cooperation

Thursday afternoon’s meeting at the Museum of Science was described by the two city councilors who spearheaded it as a step toward better cooperation between Boston and Cambridge.

Last month, talk of the meeting between the two cities spurred controversy in the Cambridge City Council.

Government, business leaders and economic experts had gathered in the building, which straddles the border between the cities, to discuss economic clusters. They spoke of Cambridge and Boston having the assets – universities and hospitals, for example -- to create strong clusters in the health and technology fields. But they also spoke of local clusters beginning to lose out to those in other regions where cities are planning cooperatively.

In Cambridge, the meeting was considered to have been held by the City Counci’s Economic Development Committee, which is chaired by City Councilor Leland Cheung.

At the end of the meeting, Cheung and Boston City Council President Mike Ross said they planned to hold similar events in the future to make sure that the two cities do what they can to help economic growth.

“I believe that our cities came together today,” Ross said. “I also believe that a sense of urgency was conveyed today. At least I feel that sense of urgency.”

“It is vitally important that we work together and look to each other if we are going to be competitive going forward,” Cheung added. “This is a long road. It is a road that we must travel down if we want to have a future in Massachusetts that leads the rest of the nation, the rest of the world.”
