This winter I wrote to the City Council regarding the dark and spooky nature of the 2 parking lots in Central Square. Councilor Leland Cheung was the only member who responded to me, and they actually fixed and added lights to those parking lots. I was surprised that anything at all happened. Those 2 parking lots were very unsafe — and they are a little better now thanks to him. I greatly appreciate his action on this matter."

I was having trouble getting the City's attention about the poor condition of the road near my house, even after calling the DPW [Department of Public Works], mayor's office, and several city councilors. Leland Cheung not only got back to me the next day but was able to expedite the road work process, and my street was fixed within months. It's nice to know that there's a city councilor in Cambridge that is truly responsive to resident's needs."

On Saturday, July 11^th 2010, there was a torrential rain storm that flooded my apartment building. The damage was devastating, and the lives of the tenants from 16 additional apartments were severely disrupted. Unfortunately, during this crisis, management severely violated lease agreements by asking tenants to make arrangements to move all items out of the apartments and relocate within 48 hours — effectively evicting us from our homes. Furthermore, they threatened the destruction of our belongings in case tenants did not comply. Needless to say, these actions were highly extreme, inconsiderate, inhumane and illegal. Having found ourselves in this unfortunate situation, we decided to contact attorneys, media and the City Council. I have to admit that what took place in those next two days restored my faith in local government and made me see the city of Cambridge in a whole new light. Councilor Leland Cheung alerted the mayor and the rest of the City Council to the irregular activities and took immediate and effective measures on our behalf, which resulted in blocking the eviction. He was compassionate, always accessible, he kept us updated, and he really went to battle for us until the management company regained their senses. There was nothing more encouraging in those moments of crisis than knowing we have Councilor Cheung, the Mayor and the rest of the City Council on our side. Councilor Cheung’s genuine commitment and unselfish dedication to help his constituents should serve as an example to anyone involved in our local government. He is the type of person that will make you proud of being a Cambridge resident, and he is exactly the type of person that should represent our interests and serve our community."
